Miss Cleo wasnt doing so well last night -- she's on tapazole for her thyroid, has been for about 2 or so years, and every so often, goes into a situation where she can't keep food down and has trouble urinating. (Signs of renal failure, btw) -- usually its just an evening and then everything is back to normal the next day.

But with the current food scare, and the fact that she's only been eating wet food for a while (she's gotten very picky about dry foods and wouldnt eat anything for a while)  -- i freaked when I saw that Trader Joe's had pulled all their wet food from the shelves AND she was doing her puking up everything and drinking a ton of water and having trouble peeing.

So now, the Queen of the Nile, Cleopatra is getting chopped up boiled chicken mixed with brown rice, which she is QUITE HAPPILY eating.

She's finally won. She gets people food, chicken in particular.

(She's got an appt. at the vet tomorrow, btw)

I'll ask the vet, but is there a real issue with an old cat like her (she's 19 years old) just feeding her this way? Its not a ton of extra work for me, and it smells better then the wet food I was feeding her. I'll check out petco's natural dry food as it seems its one of the few NOT made by Manu foods.

(I'm still sick. :( )

I sure hope miss cleo is okay!

I imagine i'd freak out, too. and I can't imagine how angry I'd be if Big Faceless Pet Food Company hurt my kids!

looked to me like all the dry food was safe. whether or not made by big faceless pet food company. i get the stuff from healthypetnet.com (and they have the scare tactics video...)

I guess the only issue with feeding the kitty that way would be to be sure it's nutritionally complete.

I hope the kitty is OK...and I lost about 50% of my hearing today from cloggage/congestion and what not. Still fighting! We're deaf sisters now lol

let's get better already!

Hi there! Not quite sure how I got on your friends list... but glad to be here! :)
I work in a small local pet/feed supply store that was fortunate enough to NOT have one single item we had to pull! *whew*
"human" foods are good for animals...just make sure you are seeing that she gets enough vitamins from it! Ask your vet how you can make sure she is getting enough Taurine in her diet. Its HIGhLY important for a cat to get Taurine and one of the main reasons it can be quite deadly for a cat to eat dog food to often!
If you can find it Fromms and Solid Gold make a kick ass cat (and dog) food. My cat is getting up there and is allergic to everything and has to take meds to be able to eat.. unless I feed her one of those...Aint cheap though.

If she won't take to any of the dry stuff, try getting some chicken baby food and smearing it on it.

When I worked for the vet, even the sickest animals we had, both cat and dog, would eat chicken baby food. It's chicken, in highly digestible form.

I hope she feels better soon.

Yeah, we got this from our vet too, when my dog ate a pork chop bone with bad results for his innards. Meat-based baby food and cottage cheese was the recommendation, and he woofed it right down. Seems like it's just the ticket when an animal needs some fairly concentrated nutrition that's gonna be easy to digest.

Thanks! She's feeling a lot better already. I actually have a few jars of baby food (chicken) for her in case she wont eat for more then a day, but she never goes more then about 8 hours without eating right now.

Hope she gets better soon.. try Waltham or Whiskas. Mars is very particular with it's ingredients and its plants. Everything is made in their own facilities which are kept as clean as people food plants. They've also got a new brand called the Good Life recipe. The two feline members of my household seem to like it, tho it seems a little rich for a dry food. (Their poopies have been a bit soft.) I know, people have issues with the "grocery store" products, but pet food is often held to higher standards than people food. When I worked for Mars, it was not uncommon to see the people tasting the food to check its quality. I always say, the ingredients are no worse than what the Scottish would eat. If you want to continue giving her chicken and rice, you may be able to find a taurine supplement. If you can't find it, make sure your giving her more leg meat than breast or wing. It's higher than the rest of the chicken in taurine and be careful not to overcook. :-)

Thanks for the personal recommendation! She does like Whiskas -- I'll try that. And she's getting organic Trader Joe's thigh meat mixed with the rice.

:)
