Does anyone who lives locally to me, and reads my LJ, have a steam cleaner / carpet cleaner, they wouldnt mind lending me for a few days / a week?

and if not, any recommendations on a good one to purchase for under 300$? I'm thinking of just renting one from the store, but thought if someone had one I could borrow, that might be easier to break it down into smaller parts...

I'd do the rental thing. Dven if you find a local friend who owns a unit, I'd bet there's going to be a big difference between the home model and the rental models, which are pretty beefy and effective. You can rent these at a lot of hardware stores, and it's not very expensive. We rented one and did all the wall-to-wall in Dad's house after he died, and had it done in record time -- like, under two hours including all furniture moving. We picked up the unit about 9 AM, returned it by 11:30, and were on the tennis courts by noon with our chores done for the day (the other kids got to clean out the refrigerator and do the dishes and laundry). Unless you've got an awful lot of square footage, you won't need "a few days" much less a week.

I'm not sure why you want to break it into smaller parts, but if transport is the issue, you can transport one of the rental ones in a normal car. Even in my Tercel.

well, I think it will help my asthma if I clean the carpets once a month, but even tho I live in a fairly small apartment, that's a lot of moving of stuff all at once, with no real place to put it so I thought, if I owned one, I can move stuff from one side of the living room, and do the carpet, wait 'til it dries, move stuff, etc etc...

Get the rental!

I have owned my own carpet cleaner ever since we bought the "new build" out in Castaic in 1999(new carpets and no initial landscaping and spring...yey!). It's one of those ones that operates like a vacuum and costs about 100 (maybe 200) dollars depending upon where you purchase it (I suggest Kmart or Target...unles you have a Costco or Sam's Club membership, then price there). With the remodel on the San Pedro house, we did not get new carpets until relatively recently. And cleaning carpets when you're tearing down and putting up walls and ceilings just seemed rather silly.

However, one of the last things I did to the San Pedro house, after the movers had packed and taken everything away, was go rent one of those . . . err . . . rentals . . . from the Von's supermarket.

It was *SO* worth it! Not just because I did not want to haul the machine I owned cross-country in the Explorer but because it did such a fabulous job! And I *do* mean

F A B U L O U S ! ! !

Go with the rental!!!

It's well worth it for intense cleaning. If you require "ongoing" cleaning (such as we sometimes do because of the cats and dogs and mud and such), then the vacuum-like models are worth the investment.

Oh, this is going to sound like a commercial, but . . . if you're attempting to remove organics (including grass, vomit, urine, poo, blood) I recommend a product called Petzyme which is the PetSmart brand of kitty/doggie cleanup stuff. I can't say enough good things about it and it's the ONLY product I've ever used that gets out kitty vomit!

Thanks -- I guess I'll just go with the rental fornow, and keep my eye open for a good vacuum one. I bought a handheld one, but it isnt worth a penny -- doesnt pull up the water once its done with it!.
