Last night with Jonathan Carroll...
Oct. 21st, 2008 08:41 amI didnt know anything about this author, but in my continued attempt to learn more about the people and world around me, I decided to check it out and want to say a huge thanks to
rhiannonstone for posting it out there. One, his voice is awesome. Two, who can't love dogs and ghosts who talk to each other?? I know his books apparently dont fall into any categories easily, but his wit and the comments about writing, and his process just really amazed me. At least this wasnt quite as bad as the sarah vowell reading, where there were a few guys who wanted to hear their own voice, and kept being quite annoying. This one had the cute young groupies. :)
Basically, he's not the kind of writer that has any idea where a book is going - they unfold themselves. I liked how he said, and I'm paraphrasing, and hopefully correctly, that once a book is written, that its just as much what the reader sees in it as it is what he as the writer had in mind. I also liked how he stated most online journals are crap - but I dont care that my journal is crap, its more for me; he's a published writer and has to keep writing to an audience.
