Happy Diwali!
Oct. 19th, 2009 02:06 pmSaturday was Diwali, the Festival of Lights, so I invited folks over on Sunday afternoon to bring a south indian vegetarian dish and hang out. THe group went from small to huge really quickly, but I think it still worked out. It was nice having enough space to invite friends over. I think for the housewarming, I'll get some stools to put in the kitchen, so folks can hang out by the passthru.
The Bell brought indian sweets (laddoos, and burfi) as well as what heather had cooked, spicy greens and cauliflower curry. I made dal, lemon rice, saffron rice and went a little crazy in the indian store and got three different kinds of bread. We had naan, but Ihave onion kulcha and roti in the freezer now.
byronium made curried brussel sprouts, which were super yum!
littletranquil was great and helped me go shopping - we had terrible misfortune in that there were no curry leaves in all of SF on Sunday. EVeryone had used them on Saturday! Fortunately, I could make a different sort of dal! So I did.
I made some sheera for dessert, but found out that while in storage, a couple of my pans have started flaking their coating off, meaning I've tossed my bigger skillet and my deep skillet. I'm likely going to replace with something new, but am curious in the world of cooking fiends, what you like - it doesnt have to be dishwasher safe, but that might be nice - I was looking at Calphalon non-stick.
Anyway, back to the dessert, I had to use my big castiron pan, which didnt work so well for this. The castiron got too hot and kept too much heat, so the cream of wheat was over toasted. Everyone liked it, but it wasnt the same. I'm making more tonite!
Was fun and a great way to celebrate the start of the new year in my new space with awesome friends.
