I think I've had (and often have, actually) a similar conversation, though given that it was between me and myself it was significantly less cogent. ;o) I’ve been thinking a lot about desire lately, and one thing I’ve tried to do (with, albeit limited success yet) is to drill down through the concrete desire to understand the core need behind it.
Questions to ponder (as though you hadn’t already worn these points to nubs already, but…yanno): What does marriage, children and 100K per year mean to you – the inner you? What are the underlying needs or cravings that might be satisfied by those achievements? Is it about security? Pride? Acceptance? Love? What other aspects of your life bring you those things?
It doesn’t take the bite out of unrequited desire, I know (ooohhh boy do I know) but at least I feel like I have hope if I fully understand my desires, you know?
