draining people

I had brunch with a couple of people I dont see that often, and I sort of realized why -- the people they attract are draining. The person who was supposed to join us, but she freaked out and left a one page hand written letter with the maitre d' -- I was slightly appalled. It was easier to write a note and run away then to come in and talk to us?
Then another note appeared from the same woman, saying she was at the internet cafe across the street and if we wanted to still meet her, she'd wait there. I at this point have no desire to meet her -- I dont know her from anyone. But the two who had been talking to her online wanted to meet her and one went over to get her. I said to keep her cell phone close in case this person was even nuttier then expected.
They show up, and this woman, who had to be in her early 20's comes to say hi. Long story short, she'd been kicked out of her apartment, was considering living under a freeway onramp with a bunch of other people who lived there, had no job and apparently no marketable skills other then playing on the internet. blah blah blah.
Still more appalled at the level of intimate details of what was happening coming out of this person, I kept backing away. I almost got run over by an irate driver because I backed into the driveway of the resturant.
Finally, I said, "oh yea, I gotta be someplace to do this thing with this person," and ran away.
Panting with relief, I got in my car. I have to admit I ducked when I saw her crossing the street, fearing she might ask for more help.

I would've said "Run Away! Run Away!"
Who the hell needs that kind of pointless, self-incurred drama?
[smooch]

Date: 2007-05-03 02:24 pm (UTC)Why such a strong reaction from you tho, mood = scared and fear of her asking for help, running away, panting... ? I mean, I tend to get away from such people too, but my physical reaction is usually limited to marathon eye-rolling and big sighs of frustration at the exposure to the unnecessary drama.

Date: 2007-05-03 04:26 pm (UTC)I was joking about the physical reactions (I should have put a sarcasm flag) -- I had trouble not rolling my eyes, because this poor girl really DID need help, just not anything I was going to give.
