Sorry to hear about the lay off. People call me the lay-off queen because one year I was laid off 4 times! Totally unexpected each time, but the point is that I made it through, and so will an intelligent woman like you ;)
Oh, and most of the time, managers don't know what to say because they're put in a really awkward position, since they're pretty much powerless and assume all of the people they manage hate them and hold them responsible. They're usually quiet because they feel bad. Don't take it personal sweetie.
