taking a laptop to india

First off, anyone have a recommendation on what sort of power converter / surge protector to purchase to take my laptop to India?

And also, anyone have experience with trying to get one's laptop BACK into the united states after travel overseas? Some friends are worried that my laptop might get confiscated.
