weekend notes! Donny Darko, or how I ended up in the kitchen all weekend

What was originally supposed to be an evening of playing Killer Bunnies and watching the movie Donny Darko turned into [livejournal.com profile] byronium spending most of his weekend in the kitchen or shopping aka:  BunnyFest '09. This wasnt exactly my plan for the weekend, but trying hard NOT to plan things often means that time is taken up.

Friday night was great - had dinner with [livejournal.com profile] whipartist and [livejournal.com profile] littletranquil in chinatown in Oakland, and went to a really nice party - looking forward to being in that space again. unfortunately that meant that I didnt make [livejournal.com profile] basmati 's Opening for open studios weekend, but I dont think anyone missed me. :) I was really peopled out after my week at work, and didnt want to go to a noisy, crowded gallery event, and the time I did finally go (Sunday) it was quiet, I actually got to spend some time with [livejournal.com profile] basmati , and look at her art in a far more pleasant to me atmosphere.

littletranquil was worried about me, apparently it took a while for me to remember to smile. I was reminded of my Amma telling me that when I would play the violin and forget to show any emotion at all.

Sat morning was nice, cooked breakfast of awesome Stumptown Coffee, grits (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] rhiannonstone !) , sausage and eggs, met up with [livejournal.com profile] byronium to go to the Alemany Farmer's Market. I'd stopped at Golden Gate Meats the night before to pick up two rabbits, so we headed to the market to see about getting veggies, etc for the menu:
  • ginger orange carrot soup with creme fraiche and truffle oil
  • braised rabbit
  • polenta
  • greens
  • fig crostada (? kinda like a giant sugarcookie with filling)
[livejournal.com profile] byronium had a weirdly lucid dream earlier in the week where I'd asked him about making some sort of salmon with some specific sort of cheese, which resulted in my wanting salmon tacos with mango salsa, and guacamole. So I made mango salsa, and guac for dinner, while convincing byronium to cook the salmon for me on saturday night. Ended up with him spending most of saturday evening cleaning as my move has been distracting him from doing needed work around his place, but I did get a lot of reading and some knitting accomplished in between helping prep for cooking on Sunday - he started the soup, and prepped the sugar cooky dough.

We had to go to an electronics store as some major bit of his stereo system bit the dust, this sucked as the traffic was bad due to Fleet Week. But we stopped at Four Barrel and got some coffee before dinner, so it wasnt all bad. I had to watch Pulp Fiction after he reset everything up to make sure the surround sound was working, and then ended up watching him play more Halo3 and falling over.

Sunday morning, up, and had some toast with honey for breakfast, and I ran out to get some last minute items, while he finished cleaning and started cooking. I stopped off at [livejournal.com profile] basmati 's studio to look at her new art - its really great! I love her new direction!

Headed back to byronium's to mostly spend the afternoon doing dishes, chopping things as needed and working.

I think dinner came out _great_, tho next time, we should get someone to volunteer to help serve, so poor B gets to sit down a bit.

Different cheeses to start with, bunny wine (same as I had at my birthday party),

Soup was great! I love how the truffle oil finishes it off, but the ginger was subtle, and the carroty flavor pretty yummy - I think this soup is _better_ in the spring, but I still love it!

Rabbit was really good - I've been a little nervous, since the last few times I've had it, my stomach has been upset by (I thought) the meat. But no such upset this time!

Afterwards, we played Killer Bunnies, and watched Donnie Darko, where the entire rabbit reference finally became apparent. Donnie Darko is one seriously FSCKED up movie.

Poor Byronium has hurt his hand helping me paint, and then hurt his neck waking up from a dream last night, I think I"ll be spending the week trying to be as nice to him as possible.

Good weekend of connecting, cooking, reading and movie watching (I watched Pulp Fiction sat night as well)
