[livejournal.com profile] byronium  is getting tickets for a few of us already who read my LJ, but if you want to go, think about it: http://www.myspace.com/bishopallen - they are playing at the Independent on the 12th of November.

We could meet for sushi beforehand!

Werked out again, 25 minutes, 2 miles. Tired. muggy today. its raining and that makes me _sad_. I was sort of wallowing in it, but friends arent allowing me to do so.

Which isnt so bad! Blood sugars are boring today, were a little high last night, but that was totally due to the rice pudding, I know that. SO GOOD.

Still can't hear for some reason. I was consistently flat all evening -- but we played a bunch of duets and worked on hand position again. I got a new lesson to try for holding my violin...

get this: 1st finger, f-sharp on the E string, 2nd finger, c-sharp on A, third finger, G on the D string, 4th finger, D on the G string. Now push all four strings down hard like you were gonna play them, and wriggle your thumb.

I almost dropped my violin doing that one. but it forces your hand into the right position.

the other good news is that he's finding some violin / viola solos -- we did a little of a Mozart one that was really lovely. Off to search the Werner Icking site tonite to find it. (So if a certain violist out there who may be reading this sees, we should definately talk! :) )

1. pick up wood violin this weekend
2. get a metronome
3. play more. :)

All those finger practices are paying off. Our usual thing is he sez, "let's play this scale in two octaves," and then we go. I'm having to think less and less about what the 'notes' are, and more and more about where my fingers are supposed to be. Next week I'm going to ask him to try doing that in 2nd, 3rd or 4th position to make it harder. (plus then I learn the geography of THOSE positions too)

We're working on this Bach piece, that's actually pretty neat for the amount of things you can learn to do well -- the various positions and shifting -- I've almost never used 1/2 position on the violin before, so that's a bit of a challenge, as well as crazy bowing (what do you mean I have to play 17 notes in one stroke??)

But I did it well! Which then led into our weekly philosophical discussion about violin playing in general -- that getting it right the first time isnt enough and about not having attachment to having done it perfectly in the past, but working on doing it perfectly in the moment AND not getting stressed when one doesnt get it right...

I didnt want to go to work today! I wanted to stay home and play my violin all day.

My music lesson last night was wonderful -- again, pushing me, but I think something small clicked. He's been talking about patterns, and I havent been getting it. I mean, intellectually, I know that my fingers fall in certain patterns on the violin while playing certain scales, etc. Open string patterns are more ingrained because they are the first ones taught. Last night, we played that pattern, just on the D string, so the 1st 5 notes of a d-major scale. Now play the SAME 5 notes, but start with the D being my 1st finger on the G string. (huh huh, i said g string) -- what's my hand pattern then? (which fingers are close together and which are seperated?) I still think about this too much, and it should be far more automatic.

The goal is to have all the open string major scales memorized starting on every finger. I'll be happy this week if I can do D and A. :)

(This likely may not make any sense to someone who doesnt play a stringed instrument, but its a good thing and will make learning other things simpler.)

patterns. Its all patterns, but my brain forgets things like Key Signatures for various keys and then, my fingers dont recall the patterns. Then tonite I get cramps. I mean, seriously. I think this week has to be spent playing scales. Over and over again until I can play them all in at least 1st position. But I did actually make some music.

(I'm watching IMF, with the new video by +44 -- have I mentioned that Travis Barker just totally trips my heart throb meter? Yowsa. No, seriously, skinny tattoo'd guys make me hot. I also think its time for a new tattoo. :) )

Hostess Twinkie Baking Sets

but I want check out: Bento Boxes and these things: Fish-shaped Soy Sauce bottles

I did practice last night -- man, I understand what he wants me to do, but I'm having trouble just doing it when he doesnt write it all out.

the idea is that I'm playing a chord, starting on the G string in the key of C. So I play 5 notes. Then I play the same 5 notes, but move it up half a step (so I start out on A-flat) which is now the key of.. um.. I can't remember...  ARGH!!!! (I think it was 5 flats. maybe two sharps. I'll check when I get home)

Then I move it up another half step to start out on A, which is in another key all together.

Its the key changes that are getting me. I can do it if we stick to one key, but I dont understand how the keys progress up each half step.
I dont 'hear' what he's wanting me to hear.

bah! more practice tonite after my midterm.
